Extra Credit — Racial Slurs

Hey all!

As we discussed and you read in the article on Tuesday, racial slurs have a loaded history in the United States and carry a lot of stereotypes and hateful connotations (hidden meanings) with them. However, some groups (besides just racial groups, but also gender groups, ethnic groups, etc.) have started taking back the language of oppression in order to remove the negative power from the word. Enjoy the following video that features a conversation between rapper Common and late poet Maya Angelou about the “n” word. WARNING: The video contains some strong language.
For extra credit, respond to the following question via email or on paper. Due 11/7!
With whom do you agree? Maya or Common? Use at least one quote from the video to support your reasons why. Answer must be in full sentences and at least 4 sentences long.
