Week 2 Assignments Posted

Wow! Overall, week 1 was very successful. Many people are learning to use the forum and interacting with one another in a mature and fun way. Kudos (good job) to all of you for your hard work so far! Just a note: email me with urgent questions, as I am able to check my email more often than I can log into the forum. I have also really enjoyed being able to see what you all are capable of. I feel that I am already learning about some of your strengths and areas where we need work. It has been awesome to communicate with you all in this way!

Week 2 assignments have now been posted. I am responding (slowly but surely) to week 1 vocabulary assignments and have already graded all of the discussion posts. If you have a question about your grades at any time, please send me an email and I would be happy to help out!

Now, tomorrow starts the dreaded task of reaching out to parents and guardians of students who have not submitted their posts or vocab assignments for week 1. While I prefer to start of relationships with as much positivity as possible, I don’t want anyone to be surprised when we return in the fall. I also want to make sure that no one is accidentally missing assignments due to misinformation or confusion.

That being said, if you have not already given me your contact info (this goes for both students and parents/guardians), please email it to me ASAP: guyenet@cmsaonline.net. This is not meant just to punish you, but also to keep your scores up.

Please continue to email me with questions and/or issues. Happy reading and writing!

Week 1 Assignment Posted

Hey all!

So this week, we are following one important rule of the workplace: keep it simple. Einstein once said something about keeping it simple…can anyone from Too Hype Squad tell me what it was?

Anyhow, the assignments for this week are both posted, and apply to all three groups so that we can avoid mass confusion while people figure out the forum. One big reason that I’m excited about doing this assignment online is that using a new website or new software is very much like problem solving. You need to do something, but can’t figure out how. So you need to use all of your problem-solving skills to figure it out! Some people get nervous in these situations, and that’s okay. Just take a deep breath and remember: no one is going to die. If you can’t figure something out, email me or message a friend.

The questions are:

1. What are some of the non-fiction text features your text has? How have you/could you have used them?

2. Find one word in the text that you didn’t know before. What is the word? What strategies did you use to figure that out?

Remember to answer the questions on the forum, NOT HERE OR THROUGH MY EMAIL.

You can access the forum at: 8thgradela.proboards.com. Happy reading and writing, y’all!

Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year/Summer Reading Program!

Hello all!

I’m not sure if this message will get to you before tonight’s meeting, but just a reminder that all incoming 8th graders should report to the CMSA cafeteria by 7 pm tonight to get their books and reading materials. I have also posted a practice post on the forum (www.8thgradela.proboards.com) that might be worth an extra credit point…hint hint!

Below, I have copied the calendar and relevant reading assignments. I will be posting updates weekly both here and to the forum, so keep and eye out for these things. Feel free to email me at any time over the summer with questions, comments, concerns, issues, or just cool stuff you’re thinking about.

I am also compiling a spreadsheet of parent/guardian contact information as well as email addresses of students so that we can communicate more effectively. If you picked up your books early, please make sure to email me this information as soon as you can.

I look forward to working with you all this summer! Can’t wait to see how you like these books 🙂 Fair warning: they will be challenging, but I hope that they will also be enjoyable.
